VFW Post 970

Commander's Corner June 2008

I'd like to thank Melissa Miller, Jim Sutter, and Eric Yonamine for representing us at the Living History Day events at FT DeRussy 17 May.  Like every year, it was a really nice way to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

Thanks to Frank Lamson, Jim Sutter, and Bill Rodrigues for do our Buddy Poppy drive at Hickam AFB Commissary 24-25 May. We passed out more that a thousand Poppies and reminded everyone what Memorial Day is for.

Thanks to Frank Lamson, Jim Sutter, Fred Dauer, and Bill Rodrigues for participating in the Memorial Day Ceremonies at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punch Bowl and the Hawaii State Veterans' Cemetery in Kaneohe.

Everyone please keep Frank Lamson in your thoughts, he fell and broke his collarbone and three ribs. We wish him a speedy recovery.

It's that time of the year again for the VFW Scholarship program.  This year's theme for the Voice of Democracy is "Service and Sacrifice by America's Veterans Benefit Today's Youth by..."  Patriot's Pen theme is "Why America's Veterans Should be Honored"  Entry Deadline is 1 November 2008.  Melissa Miller is the Committee Chair.

Our VFW Post 970 Polo shirts are in; the cost is $15 for post members and $20 for non-members.

At our last post meeting, we voted to support the 297 Air Traffic Control Squadron with refreshments during their Operational Readiness Inspection.

We are still collecting items for our Homeless Veterans project, I'm coordinating a day we can drop the items off at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Our Post Christmas Party is scheduled for 11 December 2008, we are still looking for a location.

A motion was made at the last meeting that our Post have an official formal Post shirt for ceremonies and other formal events.  We are looking at several options, any recommendation are highly encourged.

Thanks to everyone for the great job everyone's been do and I know with all your continued support we will continue to make things better for our troops and our community.

Calvin T. Yonamine, Commander
